“Tackling AMR in a Changing World: The Path Forward after the UN High-Level Meeting”
Attendance an online digital event on Nov. 18, 2024 entitled “Tackling AMR in a Changing World: The Path Forward after the UN High-Level Meeting”. The event was offered by International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).
Description: Antimicrobial resistance was recognized as one of the top ten global health threats and was further intensified by climate change, posing a significant challenge to global health security and hindering progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Reflecting its critical global importance, it became the focus of the High-Level Meeting (HLM) at the 2024 UN General Assembly, held on 26 September.
The meeting, attended by heads of state, ministers, and civil society leaders, served as a pivotal moment to rally political commitment and action at national, regional, and international levels to address the drivers, sources, and challenges of antimicrobial resistance.
In this webinar, experts from the World Health Professions Alliance (WHPA) reviewed the outcomes of the meeting and discussed their implications for ongoing efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance. Questions were raised regarding whether the meeting would lead to stronger political commitments and increased funding to bridge the implementation gap. Financial and operational challenges faced by governments and health systems in enacting effective AMR strategies were explored, alongside the differing impacts in low, middle-, and high-income countries and ways to address these global disparities.
Discussions also addressed how public health messaging should evolve to encourage antimicrobial stewardship among professionals and the public. Additionally, examples of best practices in interprofessional collaboration on AMR were highlighted to guide and inspire future initiatives.
